Angel Inn, Cardigan

Angel, CardiganThe Angel is a large and imposing building in St Mary Street.  It was a former coaching inn which had ample stabling at the back.  At one time part of the Angel was used as a Nonconformist meeting house.  It was also used as the barracks for the local Militia and whilst the Public Buildings were being built it was also used as a grammar school.

Commercial, Cardigan

During the mid 19th century the Commercial Hotel was one of the principal hostelries in Cardigan and in 1877 known as the Boadicea. 

In 1891 the Commercial was run by Samuel and Emma Owen who had a daughter aged 10 and had two servants Rachel Morgan age 21 and Mary Lewis age 18.

By the time the Commercial closed it was owned by Felinfoel Brewery and the landlord in 2008 was David Handel Lewis.
 

Hope and Anchor, Cardigan

The Hope and Anchor is located in the Pendre area of Cardigan and it’s unusual in this day and age that it’s next door to another public house called the Commercial which is closed at the time of writing.  A traditional public house divided into two sections with the lounge on the left side of the building and the bar on right hand side.

The Black Lion, Cardigan

The Black Lion, CardiganA building of some kind has been on the site of The Black Lion Hotel since 1105 and is probably the oldest coaching inn in Wales.  At the time Cardigan became an important stopover on the journey between north and south Wales with the Black Lion becoming an important coaching inn and within its courtyard it housed stables, coach houses and the town’s well. 

Lamb Inn, Cardigan

Lamb Inn, CardiganLocated on Finch Square in Cardigan the inn is believed to have once been a hostel for pilgrims who visited the Shrine of Our Lady at the Priory Church.  The present distinctive black and white building dates from 1850 and stands on the edge of town.  Stone built with low wooden ceilings. 

Waterloo Hotel, Aberystwyth

The waterloo Hotel was completely destroyed by fire in 1919 and the Kings Hall was built on the site.

White Hart, Cenarth

White Hart, CenarthThe whitewashed White Hart is located in the heart of Cenarth in west Wales.  Dating back to the 18th century and long been a pub associated with coracle fishing.  Indeed a Teifi coracle proudly hangs outside and such a vessel is the norm in this part of the country. 

Bell Vue, New Quay

The short lived Bell Vue was located on George Steet.  Opened in circa 1868 and flourished until the 1880s.

Marine Hotel, Aberystwyth

Located on the parade and overlooking Cardigan Bay in Aberystwyth.  Not too far away from the town centre.

Yr Hen Lew Du, Aberystwyth

Aberystwyth’s second oldest public house dating from the 14th century.  Has been called the Old Black Lion since at least 1771.  Back in 1875 the landlady was a certain Margaret Thomas.

In the early 19th century stagecoaches left the Black every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturdays at 4am and returned at 9pm on the same evening.

Popular with locals and students alike.
