Pubs associated with Welsh sportsmen

King Head, Pontarddulais

The King Hotel dates back to at least 1841 when Daniel Gregory was the recorded publican on the census forms and over the years the pub has been known as the King’s Arms, King Inn and King’s Head.  A popular haunt of miners during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

During the 1920s an occasional drinker was the Welsh boxer Tommy Farr who lodged close to the establishment and fought in local fairs.

Anchor Inn, Rhosllannerchrugog

The old inn stood at the bottom of Pentre Hill but fire destroyed the establishment in 1956.  The licensee in the 1930s was Edward Davies who was known locally as Ned the Anchor, who served home brew.

The boxer, Billy Morgan, had his own gymnasium in the pub's stables.

The Bird in Hand, Neath

Neath RUF during the 1920s changed at the pub and then proceeded to walk across the fairground to the ground.  According to Dai Davies ‘they had shower baths and showers, everything was there for us’
