The Turf, Wrexham

The Turf was built around the 1840s on Mold road with John Tench being the first landlord in 1844.  Originally called the Turf Tavern and renamed the Turf Hotel when the pub was rebuilt in the 1860s.

The Turf’s balcony was used in the early days by the gentry to watch sporting events.  Over the years the balcony has barred witness to many various sports and was known as the best seat in the house!  Most diehard Wrexham fans have had a drink in this renowned and well known establishment.  At one time the pub was a popular quiz question namely ‘the only football league ground to have a pub on it’?  Sadly this no longer applies with Wrexham’s relegation and the opening of the Pryce Griffiths stand in 1999.

At one time it had its own bowling green situated where the present car is located today.

Growing campaign to have the Turf listed.
